It’s been almost 4 months since Abidal stepped up for the Catalan club. The full back who quenched the thirst for Barca to win 14 major titles underwent a successful liver transplantation. Sources say the 32 year old defender could still dive into the football world if he desires. Fans all over the world showed an unforgettable support and well wishes through sportswebsites and social networking services for the Frenchman.
The ace defender scored his second goal for Barcelona, helping the visitors come from behind to win it 2–1 at Santiago Berbabeu. Moreover, he renewed his contract with the club, keeping him at the Camp Nou until next season. During Barca’s match against Getafe, the supporters clapped for the entire 22nd minute at Nou Camp and on 28 May, during the Champions League final against Red Devils, he played the entire 90 minutes in the 3–1 glorious victory. Carles Puyol handed Eric his captain armband and allowed him to lift the Champions League trophy in front of a packed 85,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.
After the transplantation his surgeon claimed that Eric could regain his complete fitness and can continue his football career.”If Eric responds well, there is no reason why he shouldn’t. The liver is an organ that regenerates in three months. Abidal has to recover little by little, but between three and six months, or up to a year after the intervention, the patient is able to have a normal life.”
After he recovers to the fullest he can adopt the football life he missed for months. He would undergo complete checkup and train for the team and remain fit for the future matches with the Catalans. Even though he wouldn’t be directly jumping to the first team, he would be made substitute and gradually get into the pitch playing for first 30 minutes or last 10 minutes. That’s how it is supposed to be as far there is not a lot of competition as a full back in a prolific team like Barca.
Abidal has played his part well as a defender as he helped the team cruise into finals of Champions league 2010. He was also first choice during EURO 2008 as well as the World Cup 2010 under Raymond Domenech . Abidal was also in doubt if he could recover by the Euro 2012 but was in utter disappointment after doctors revealed he wouldn’t gain complete fitness and required complete rest. He is a defender with high spirits and good consistency and shows a very positive character. Hope Abidal plays for Barca once again.
