The Netherlands made quick work of Italy. Vivianne Miedema and Stefanie van der Gragt led the Oranje into the next round, scoring within 10 minutes of each other on two headers to end Italy’s historic run.
It was Sweden, however, who stunned the field with a 2-1, come-from-behind victory over two-time World Cup winner, Germany.
Sofia Jakobsson scored to even the score with Germany’s in the 22nd minute. Stina Blackstenius slammed home a spilled rebound just after returning from halftime to snag the victory.
It’s a tale of two Cinderella stories for the semis on this half of the bracket. The Swedes are the lowest ranked team left in the World Cup but are looking to continue to turn heads with a win over Netherlands.
This is Holland’s first ever appearance in the semifinal stage of the World Cup, and only their second time competing at the tournament.
It’ll be a flying finish for both nations looking to book their ticket to the final.
