So it is for Indiana, one of the sport’s blue-blood programs that somehow finds itself as one of the First Four teams in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers (20-13) just sneaked into the tournament with a couple of timely wins in the Big Ten Tournament, and will face off against a talented Wyoming team. The Cowboys (25-8) are one of four Mountain West teams that made the field in 2022.
In a battle of name recognition, the Cowboys stand no chance. Luckily for them, that amounts to nothing at this stage (as March Madness is so quick to remind fans every year). Still, for those inclined to consider such factors, it’s worth noting Indiana has a perfect 3-0 record against Wyoming, winning each of the matchups in 1951, ‘82 and ‘99. The closest the Cowboys have come to winning was in the first meeting, a 57-55 loss.

For this meeting, the Hoosiers will likely rely heavily on junior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, who leads the team both in scoring (18.1 points per game) and rebounding (8.2 per game). Xavier Johnson (12.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists per game) and Race Thompson (11.5 points, 7.6 rebounds per game) also stand to be significant contributors in the game.
Wyoming’s team isn’t full of slouches, however: The Cowboys are led by sophomore forward Graham Ike, who averages an impressive 19.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game this year. Senior guard Hunter Maldonado is a versatile weapon as well, averaging 18.4 points, 6.3 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game. Senior Drake Jeffries is similarly effective scoring and dishing the ball with 10.5 points and 5.3 assists per game.
