Washington (5-7) came back from a 14-0 deficit to give Pittsburgh its first loss of the season on Monday in 23-17 fashion. Alex Smith may have won the Comeback Player of the Year Award in the process, passing for 296 yards and a touchdown. The win was Washington’s third straight victory and first win over a team with a winning record. New York currently holds a head-to-head tiebreaker over Washington for first place in the NFC East, but it’s not out of the question that if Washington wins out it could still sneak in as a Wild Card.
San Francisco (5-7) lost its last real chance to compete for the NFC West with its most recent loss to Buffalo on “Monday Night Football.” The 49ers are now a full three games back of Los Angeles and Seattle for the division lead. Injuries have been just too much to overcome this year for the reigning NFC champions, but even with most of their best defenders missing, San Francisco’s defense ranks sixth, allowing 326.3 yards a game.
For the second straight week, San Francisco’s “home” game will be played in Arizona’s State Farm Stadium to comply with California regulations banning contact sports. The 49ers aren’t scheduled to return home until their Week 17 game against the Seahawks.
