MORE: Live updates and highlights from 49ers-Seahawks
It’s almost difficult to believe that the top two teams in the NFC West are the 49ers and the Seahawks, given the standing of the quarterback situation with each squad.
Few could have seen Geno Smith’s MVP-caliber season coming this year, especially after the open battle in training camp he was in with Drew Lock. Smith has rewarded Seattle’s patience and loyalty: He’s one of the league’s best passers and has helped guide the Seahawks to a 7-6 record in the thick of the division hunt.
That said, there’s still a two-game lead in the NFC West, and it belongs to the 49ers and their equally surprising passer, Brock Purdy. With injuries to both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, Mr. Irrelevant has kept the 49ers relevant with wins in Week 13 and 14, helping mitigate the loss of Garoppolo and keeping San Francisco’s Super Bowl aspirations alive. Purdy is dealing with an oblique/rib injury himself, though is considered day-to-day.
